Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Blood Work Panel — Understanding Your Immune Response

Take a closer look at your immune response to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4 and best known for causing mononucleosis (“mono”).

This five-marker antibody panel from Immunosciences Lab provides information that can help your healthcare provider evaluate past exposure, a recent infection, or patterns that may warrant further investigation for reactivation.

IMPORTANT: THIS IS BLOOD WORK. A professional blood draw is required. Follow the collection instructions provided with your order and confirm the appropriate blood-draw location before scheduling. The blood draw itself may come with an additional charge.

How to Order

We order this panel through SA Integrative Health’s Fullscript site. Please review the preparation and collection instructions included with your order.

Why Look at EBV?

After an initial infection, EBV remains in the body in a latent—or inactive—state and can sometimes reactivate. Having a latent infection does not automatically mean the virus is causing symptoms.

Research has linked EBV to numerous autoimmune conditions. The test listing references more than 30 autoimmune disorders, although the strength of evidence varies by condition. A major study identified connections between an EBV protein and genetic risk regions associated with seven autoimmune diseases: lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and type 1 diabetes.

These links do not mean EBV causes every case of these conditions, or that a positive antibody result proves an underlying EBV infection is driving your symptoms.

Biomarkers Included—In Plain Language

Epstein-Barr Early Antigen IgG [Index]
Looks for antibodies against proteins produced during an early phase of viral activity. This marker may appear with a recent infection or reactivation, but it can remain positive in healthy people for years. It does not confirm reactivation on its own.

Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen IgG [Index]
Looks for longer-lasting antibodies against proteins associated with the virus inside infected cells. These antibodies generally develop after the initial infection and commonly remain for life, making this primarily a marker of past exposure.

Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen IgM [Index]
Measures an additional IgM antibody response to EBV nuclear proteins. This is a less routinely used marker and requires interpretation using the laboratory’s guidance and the other results. A positive result alone does not establish a new infection or reactivation.

Epstein-Barr Viral Capsid Antigen IgG [Index]
Looks for antibodies against the virus’s outer protein shell. These appear during infection and usually remain for life. A positive result commonly reflects previous exposure; a high result alone does not prove an active infection.

Epstein-Barr Viral Capsid Antigen IgM [Index]
Looks for antibodies that usually appear early in a new infection and often fade within weeks. A positive result can support a recent infection, but persistent or nonspecific results can occur, so the complete antibody pattern matters.

“Index” refers to the laboratory’s antibody measurement scale. It is not a measurement of the amount of virus in your blood.

Your Results. Your Next Step.

All testing requires follow-up with a healthcare provider for interpretation and recommendations. Once your results are available, you may:

  • Schedule with SA Integrative Health for a holistic, integrative review and personalized recommendations.

  • Take your results to your primary care doctor for interpretation, further evaluation, and conventional medical recommendations.

A 30-minute Discovery Appointment with SA Integrative Health is $95, charged separately from the lab panel unless specifically stated otherwise.

Understanding Your Results

This panel measures your immune system’s antibody response—not the virus itself. Results must be considered alongside your symptoms, medical
